Throwback Thursday: A Spotlight on Retro Looks for 2013

Posted on 09:58 by Ratan
Every fashion season it is inevitable that we see retro trends from decades past rear their heads for yet another moment in the fashion spotlight.  In the late 90's we saw a rebirth of the hippy bell-bottom pant and the 2000's have brought an onslaught of 70's fashion with the aviator glasses trend and peasant tops.

This season is certainly no exception as fashion houses are rolling out styles inspired by 60's and 90's fashion... yes, you read that right, 90's fashion.  The decade whose fashion made many of us LOL and roll our eyes is coming back in a bigger and better way for the Spring and Summer 2013 seasons.

Check out some of the retro looks debuted on the catwalks in Paris and New York and be sure to keep your eye out for these looks in local boutiques as Spring and Summer looks continue rolling out.

60's Fashion Trend: The Baby Doll Dress

This look is a classic that we really love because it blends so many different elements of style.  The baby doll dress is typically cut very short to show off the maximum amount of leg, however it does not force you to expose too much skin as the bust and shoulders are covered by a modest neckline and cute little cap sleeves.  The look to the left by Moschino is a simple white version, however it is punched up with some sun flower decals and a textured line pattern near the hem making the style cute, sexy, and interesting all in one piece.  It also allows other elements of the ensemble to pop, like the red lips, handbag, and heels, without creating an ostentatious or overwhelming look.  This look would be great for a warm summer time party or even date night.

60's Fashion Trend: The Spring Coat

In talking about  his Spring Summer 2013 line designer Marc Jacobs has been quoted as saying, "Young girls need to learn that  sexiness isn't about being naked."  Looking at this piece from one of his most recent runway shows we are definitely in agreement with him.  Long coats like this leather masterpiece are essential for unpredictable spring weather but are still incredibly sexy and sophisticated.  The high neckline with oversized black and white collar cover up the bust and chest but also give off a very put-together look that is simple and sleek.  This type of coat is great for heading out to work or important business dates.

90's Fashion Trend: Slip Dresses

This spin on the slip dress by Top Shop Unique is a fun take on the traditional tank dress that is playing with sheer trends that have been all the rage lately.  We love the simplicity in color and design, but we really love the sheer straps and hem that make what could be an incredibly tiny and revealing dress just a little more comfortable and casual without giving away any of the qualities that make it fun and sexy.  This dress is great for one of the scorching Chicago party nights but could also be dressed down with a pair of wedges for day-time engagements as well.

90's Fashion Trend: Grunge... With a Twist

The unkempt trends of the grunge counter culture of the 90's have come back in a big way, however, they have taken a turn for the seriously trendy and upscale.  This ensemble by Ashish reflects the best of the baggy and messy, but they've kicked it up a notch by sticking to a black, white and grey color scheme and also incorporating unpredictable fabrics such as the shiny black, baggy shorts.  This look may be evolving and might not be for everyone, but when seriously thought through and put together, we can see this working on the streets of Chicago.  We also might just be happy to embrace anything that isn't garish and skin tight.

90's Fashion Trend: Shoulder Pads and High-Wasted Trousers

The jury might still be out on this one, but we can definitely appreciate the effort to create a structured and powerful look for women.  The high-waisted cut for pants are great for defining and complementing all types of body shapes and are definitely a welcome alternative to the butt-crack bearing side effects of some low-cut styles of pant.  The shoulder padded blazer creates an interesting and imposing silhouette for women.  The architecture of this look gives wearers broad, yet angular shoulders, which can exude power and confidence.  We did not think we were ready for the Working Girl look to be back so fast, but are appreciating the throwback and looking forward to what this may evolve into.

Fashion Icon Friday: Usher!

Posted on 12:48 by Ratan
Let's hear it for the boys!
...ahem.  Men.

Yes, we are excited because for the first time in our short history, Halfstack is honoring a male fashion icon!  Maybe it's because we can't take our eyes off of him on the show The Voice... or maybe after all these years we still can't get those sensual guitar strums out of our head from his 1998 song "Nice and Slow."  Either way, whether he's judging us or crooning us, he always manages to look suave doing it so today we honor Mr. Usher Raymond with one fabulous fashion icon Friday.

Observe.
After 15 years in the business, Usher has not ceased to amaze us with his smooth voice, shrewd business sense and, most importantly here at Halfstack, his impeccable style.  He is able to pull off a range of looks from casual basketball shoes and sweats to tailor fitted suits and sweater vests.  At left, he's shows his versatility and sense of style by mixing a knit sweater vest with  a velvet suit coat, a beautiful, layered combination that would go great at any holiday or wintertime party.

Below, Usher displays his playful sense of fashion by donning a bright teal suit at left and pairing different shades of denim (with leopard print sneakers!) at right.  He always accessorizes with a great pair of shades but, unlike other celebs, he doesn't hide behind them because he knows his best accessory of all is that beaming smile.  We love his fearlessness and the fun-loving attitude that comes across in his fashion and his demeanor.

Wednesday's Winning Looks - Fashion Star

Posted on 10:56 by Ratan

A few weeks ago NBC's hit show Fashion Star staged a competition in which the contestants designed garments that would flatter models of all shapes and sizes.  The episode titled "Something for Everyone" featured models, both petite and full figured,

showcasing the looks designed by the contestants.  The aim was to come up with a look that was democratic and flattering; something that regular customers of all sizes would love to wear.  At the end of the show, two designers came out on top as their garments were purchased by Express buyer Erika De Salvatore.

The first purchase was the Geo Tunic, a loose-fitting blouse with a geometric print and keyhole back, designed by Cassandra Hobbins.  Check it out on the runway:

De Salvatore was excited that Hobbins created such a unique outfit for the show and a truly flattering look that any woman would love to wear.  "I thanked her for making a top.  Most people made dresses, but tunics do really well at Express and she put her own spin on it!" De Salvatore said.  The Geo Tunic is now available in Express stores for $39.90 in Soft Ivory, Warm Stone and Cayman Blue.

The second look purchased by De Salvatore was a Peplum Dress by designer Hunter Bell.  The dress features a high neckline and cinched waist, a look that is forgiving and flattering on any body shape.  The look is “the perfect combination of two of Express’s favorite trends: peplum and leopard.” De Salvatore said.

Here's the dress on the runway:
And the version that is now available in Express stores for $78:

April Fool's Fashion: Looks That Make Us Say Whaaaat!?

Posted on 18:41 by Ratan
Happy April Fool's, Halfstackers!  In honor of the hijinks and tomfoolery that are associated with the first of April, we decided to give you guys a showcase of looks and trends that make us say: "WTF?!" in a little feature we like to call Fool's Fashion.
Uhh...
For those of us who love and follow it, fashion can turn into a slippery slope.  After thumbing through the latest pages of Vogue, Glamour or Lucky, you might decide to try some new trends out for yourself.  First, you might splurge on a pair of Pucci pumps or the hot new Marc Jacobs cross-body messenger bag.  After successfully trying out the latest version of the bandage dress, you might opt to branch out a little bit... test the limits of your personal fashion philosophy.  Before you know it you're sporting head to toe denim (à la Justin and Britney circa 2001) and shaving the sides of your head in order to install metal studs (oh, Ke$ha).  Ok, that might be a little extreme, but with an incredible array of influence that various fashion houses draw from it's easy to see how bad fashion can happen to well-meaning fashionistas.  Check out some of our least favorite looks and trends on some of our favorite celebrity fashion influences below...

1. Socks and Sandals.

It almost seems criminal criticizing the artist formerly known as fashion and culture icon, Carrie Bradshaw, but Sarah Jessica Parker has done herself in with the trend that was originally popularized by men over 65.  We're so used to seeing SJP able to pull off any look, no matter how wacky or out there, but this crime is just so offensive that even her casual-hip-New-York-mom style can't save the fashion abomination on her feet.  Of course, we give her props for trying something new and won't give her too much hell as she's not walking a red carpet, but taking her kids to school, but let's think seriously about socks and sandals next time, Mrs. Parker!

2. The Mullet Skirt.

While we appreciate the innovation in playing with unusual hemlines and the attempt to bridge the gap between casual and dressy, this is a trend that we have not fully jumped on board with quite yet.  This fixture from the festival circuit, just seems un-even and confused.  With the short, "party" length of the skirt in front and the long, "business" length in the back the mullet skirt ends up not really covering much up at all and leaves the wearer wondering what season this look might truly be appropriate for.  We have seen this look pulled off successfully by starlets like Blake Lively and Kristen Cavallari, but overall we're ready for this look to evolve into a classier, more defined version of itself.

3.  Tribal Prints.
Ryan Gosling may be one sexy, stylish man, but in our opinion these "tribal" or "ethnic" prints have run their course.  Falling victim to yet another trend cultivated by the hippy, festival crowd, Gosling rocks the geometric, faux-woven pattern underneath a burgundy cardigan on the street.  Again, we won't punish him too hard because this is a casual look, but this garish print does no justice to the historically significant designs that inspired it and comes off as somewhat juvenile and uninformed.

4. Ugg Boots and Shorts.

And to round out our little April Fool's Day fun, we give you Snooki.  This lovable ditz, iconic for her fist-pumping days on the Jersey Shore, is practically a walking fashion disaster.  Nothing screams fashion schizophrenia more than donning warm Ugg boots (covered in heat-stroke inducing fur) with some Daisy Duke length shorts.  Similar fashions have been shown on Britney Spears and Hayden Panettiere in some cool California weather, but Snooki is rocking this look in Florence, a center of style and fashion, in the middle of the hot, Italian summer (yikes!).  The pint sized star sure knows how to accessorize her unique look with her Louis Vuitton bag and camp-beige neck brace as well.  In spite of her fashion antics, we still love Snooki for her Shore antics, we're just hoping trends like this get cancelled for good!

Fashion Icon Friday: Lily Collins

Posted on 12:50 by Ratan
As you all probably already know, here at Halfstack we are all about the up and comers, the young bloods, the fresh faces giving us new life and great new ideas.  This week we honor one of those up and comers with her very own Fashion Icon Friday post: Miss Lily Collins!

Behold the beauty!
This piercing beauty is the daughter of British rocker Phil Collins (Mike Tyson hilariously mimicked the drum solo from his song "In the Air Tonight" in The Hangover) and his second wife, Jill Tavelman, an American.  Lily began acting at a very young age, but recently broke into the spotlight with roles in The Blind Side, which won Sandra Bullock an Oscar, and Mirror, Mirror with our favorite pretty woman, Julia Roberts.  While racking up an impressive list of roles and Oscar-winning co-stars for her resume, Collins has also managed to catch our eyes with her darling sense of style.

With parents hailing from both sides of the pond, it's no wonder that she can easily meld touches of British elegance with an American sense of "the girl next door."  She is not afraid to make daring fashion choices and also show off her femininity... sometimes adding just a touch of whimsy.

Even while running errands out in California, Lily shows a sense of ease and sophistication in her casual dress.  Check her out below donning the open stitch sweater and Dara tote by Vince Camuto.
Want to get Lily's look? Check out sweaters, jeans, bags, and a whole lot more to ooh and ahh over at Vince Camuto.

4th Annual Real People of Style Event

Posted on 13:32 by Ratan
Last Thursday night at the 900 North Michigan Shops, the movers and shakers at CheekyChicago hosted its 4th Annual Real People of Style fashion show.  With a very fashionable and exuberant crowd in attendance, CheekyChicago treated onlookers to a showcase of eye-popping spring fashion curated by style makers adoptedSTYLE and The View from 5'2".  The show's ensembles featured pieces from the latest lines of retailers and designers such as DNA2050, DEKA Chicago, Karen Millen, Original Penguin, Diesel, L.K.Bennett and Bloomingdale’s.  The models working the catwalk were local personalities and fellow lovers of fashion... only one of the billed models, David Sanchez, was actually a professional model with the Ford agency.  Other personalities included Angi Taylor from KISS FM and Graham Kostic from Glossedandfound.com.  Professional and amateur alike, every model strutted their stuff and owned the raucous crowd!

Jen P from Halfstack was on hand to snap pictures while she enjoyed the fun atmosphere (...and yummy drinks!).  Check out pics below!

Fashion Icon Friday: Jennifer Lawrence

Posted on 12:18 by Ratan
Did you guys hear?  Jennifer Lawrence is taking over the world!

Ok, ok.  I understand that the memo has officially gotten out about this unapologetically real personality.  What with her fashionable sweep of the award season, culminating with the OSCAR of all things, and her status as a bona fide action franchise star as Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games series, this girl is a tour-de-force and today, Halfstack Magazine salutes her!

She is a style chameleon as we all saw throughout awards season and on the various red-carpets for movie premieres.  She can rotate from dark goth to classic Hollywood to blonde bombshell without missing a single fashion step; showcasing a versatility that is practically unmatched among Hollywood's bevy of cookie cutter image makers and sellers.
Miss Lawrence also rocks an attitude that is unabashed and unfiltered.  Just check her out playfully flipping off the press room following her Oscar win and you know just how much of a badass this young star is.  In Silver Linings Playbook, she blows the audience away with a visceral performance as a young widow who has lost her hold on life and sanity, proving that she has the talent to back up her sassy personality.  I mean, who else could fall on the Oscar stage and still pull off her moment in the spotlight with such class, poise, and humility.  We love to laugh with this girl and we can't wait to see what she does or says next.

Posted on 20:00 by Ratan
Jack Spade, the brand that started with one messenger bag in a hardware store, has officially expanded into a full line of mens clothing and accessories with the March launch of its first line of original watches.  The line features 37 beautiful timepieces ranging from casual to dressy.  The philosophy behind the design of the watches remains consistent with the Jack Spade brand: useful, durable, stylish.  These classic pieces are available at a range of prices starting at a very affordable $98.

On March 7th, Jack Spade Chicago celebrated the launch of the watch line with a lavish bash at its retail location in the Gold Coast.  Jack Spade representatives were on hand to show off the watch collection and guests were treated to drinks and appetizers.  The party was hosted by local fashion personality, Tommy Valentino.

Fashion Icon Friday: Zooey Deschanel

Posted on 12:14 by Ratan
In celebration of the quirky!
Oh, Zooey!  She can serenade us with her smoky voice and she's hilarious as our favorite room-mate, Jess, on 'New Girl'  but we really love Ms. Deschanel for that which we can all relate to on some level or another: awkward cuteness.  She inspires us to embrace our girly-ness while still being different and embracing the alternative.
Adorable casual.
Vamped up, yet sweetly Zooey.
Oh, and this adorable manicure she sported at the Emmy's!

Whether she's pairing tights with a cute, longer top or basking in the frilly confections of sundresses and couture gowns, Zooey always wows with her eccentric signature style and attitude that will not be watered down or subdued.  Zooey, we salute you!

Feature Sneak Peek: 826CHI

Posted on 11:40 by Ratan
Have you ever found yourself in need of messenger pigeon feed, a disguise kit, or other gadgets and gizmos related to clandestine spy operations?  If so, head on over to an  inauspicious looking storefront in Wicker Park called The Boring Store-- and support a great local cause in the process.
On the outside, The Boring Store looks like any one of your run-of-the-mill storefronts... boasting its normal-ness and a "nothing to see here" attitude.  However, those in the know will quickly realize that this storefront is actually the headquarters for one of the most impressive organizations in Chicago: 826CHI.
826CHI is the Chicago branch of a non-profit organization called 826 National that was founded by a group headed by writer Dave Eggers.  The group is dedicated to providing free tutoring services in writing to children of all ages.  One of 826CHI's main goals to inspire children to think creatively and to give them the tools to express that creativity in writing.  Funding for 826CHI is partially covered by profits from The Boring Store.

A few weeks ago, we had the great honor of catching up with 826CHI's ever-enthusiastic executive director, Barry Benson, for a feature article coming up in our next issue due out on March 17th.  Keep an eye out for our next issue to learn more about 826CHI and be sure to check out 826CHI and The Boring Store at www.826chi.org.

Fashion Icon Friday: Audrey Hepburn

Posted on 16:51 by Ratan
"If I'm honest, I have to tell you I still read fairy-tales I like them best of all"
-Audrey Hepburn

It is impossible to not fall in love with Audrey Hepburn.  Whether you have seen her as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's, Princess Ann in Roman Holiday, or as UNICEF's Goodwill ambassador, one thing is true of Ms. Hepburn and her style: she is simply timeless.
While she is known for the glamour of her little black dress and up-swept hair combo from Breakfast at Tiffany's, Hepburn is an icon of simplistic personal style.  She was the pioneer that made skinny jeans with ballet flats a staple for every woman of style and substance.  She also popularized many accessories along the way such as round frame sunglasses and scarves for the waist and neck.

We found some simple pieces inspired by Ms. Hepburn from a few local and online stores.  Check out our finds!

From top left to right: Matchstick jeans in garment-dyed denim from J.Crew, Turtleneck sweater from Mango, Adidas Originals Avignon Round Sunglasses, Scarf (amazon),    Necklace from J.Crew, Perfect Oxford Shirt from the Gap, and Leather Peplum top from Express.
